Wilde
Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was a renowned Irish poet, playwright, author, and wit, celebrated for his clever humor, iconic works, and poignant life story. He is best known for his clever humor, satire, and epigrams, including:
- "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken"
- "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars"
Wilde's literary masterpieces include:
- "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (novel, 1890)
- "The Importance of Being Earnest" (play, 1895)
- "An Ideal Husband" (play, 1895)
- "The Happy Prince and Other Tales" (short stories, 1888)
In his prime Oscar Wilde and his contemporaries embraced the green carnation as a symbol of their aesthetic movement and, more subtly, of their queer identity.
Wilde's life took a tragic turn when he was imprisoned for two years (1895-1897) for gross indecency due to his homosexual relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas. This led to public scandal, bankruptcy, and exile after his release. He died in Paris on November 30, 1900, at the age of 46
Despite the challenges he faced, Wilde's works remain timeless, captivating audiences with their wit, humor, and insight into the human condition.
Thoth, as a brand, is dedicated to amplifying Wilde's messages and promoting the legacy of queer icons like him, celebrating their impact on art and society.
